Basel is a city on the Rhine River in northwest Switzerland, close to the country’s borders with France and Germany. Its medieval old town centers around Marktplatz, dominated by the 16th-century, red-sandstone Town Hall. Its 12th-century Gothic cathedral has city views, and contains the tomb of the 16th-century Dutch scholar, Erasmus. The city’s universityhouses some of Erasmus’ works.

Basel is a center for both banking and art. Museum Tinguely houses kinetic sculptures by the Swiss artist alongside exhibits tracing his life and work. The Museum of Contemporary Art and the Renzo Piano–designed Fondation Beyeler both display modern art, while the Vitra Design Museum is in a Frank Gehry building. Mittlere Brücke is a renovated bridge, originally built in 1225, that spans the Rhine. East along the river, the Roman settlement of Augusta Raurica is an archaeological site and open-air museum. Zoo Basel is a popular 19th-century zoo housing lions, snow leopards and gorillas.
